Osama Bin Laden couldn’t take it anymore, he believed his country and his fellow kinsmen where under the imperialistic hegemony of the United States government, and nobody was doing anything about it
He believed it so strongly that the hate, anger and the desire to liberate his people filled his entire mind for years. This prompted him to conceptualize a highly sophisticated method of getting back at the US government, the result of which was the September 11, attack on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center (twin towers) that left about 5000 people dead
Like a wounded Lion, the US government spun into action and ruthlessly bombarded the Taliban government of Afghanistan
Today, Osama Bin Laden may not only be dead, he is enjoying world condemnation over his own way of expressing anger This is what indignation is all about, this is what it does, and this is the magnitude of its damage
“He that is slow to anger is better than a mighty man, and he that is controlling his spirit than the one capturing a city” (Prov 16:32)
The Oxford Advanced Dictionary describes indignation as anger caused by injustice, misconduct, or undeserved blame. Anger itself is a strong feeling that comes when one has been wronged or when one sees cruelty or injustice, the feeling that makes people want to quarrel or fight.
It should be noted that the term injustice is relative and opinionated. It depends on who is looking at it. This perhaps explains Cain’s obstinacy, even after murdering his brother based on his belief that a great injustice had been done to him (Gen 4: 5-10).
The Torah (Bible) gives a vivid overview of indignation as: “An answer when mild turns away rage, but a word causing pain makes anger to come up (Prov. 15:1) With this, Abraham was able to convince the Almighty Yahweh to suppress His anger if ten righteous persons were found in Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 18.30)
In our contemporary society, it is pertinent that indignation overrides the thinking faculties of man, of which positive argument is no longer given the opportunity to prevail
The Bible commands (Col 3:8)-“put them all away from you wrath, anger, badness, abusive speech……”.
Although, it is normal to be wrathful and possible to be angered: even the Bible attests to this (Eph 4:26) It becomes spiritually, morally, socially. psychologically and strategically wrong to act on the basis of ones anger.
“He that is quick to anger will commit foolishness (Prov 14:17)
A popular wisdom quote also opines that “When you are angry what you will damage will be more than what causes your anger”
The hostility between the United States and Iraq, no thanks to Sadam Hussein, caused him his dethronement and even the death of his son.
“Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become angered, for anger rests in the bosom of the stupid one” (Eccl. 7:9)
Is possible to be free from Indignation? The answer is Yes. Even the Almighty Yahweh repented after destroying the whole world with water (Gen 8.21).
Firstly, it is best to disassociate oneself from temper-prone and easily angered friends to prevent any sort of infiltration. The Bible concors with this in (Prov. 22:24), “Do not have companionship with anyone given to anger, and do not enter in with a man having fits of rage”
Also, learn to understand yourself, know your flaws and try to correct or reduce them to the barest minimum, because:
“The insight of a man certainly slows down his anger, and it is beauty on his part to Passover transgression.”(Prov 19:11).
This is a useful weapon in overcoming indignation and thus freeing oneself from sin. However, this is only possible through a perfect understanding of the Scripture as well as having a mutual understanding, mutual relationship, mutual goodwill, and mutual trust in Yahweh. Hence, the need to be reformed, the need to repent, the need to change, and the need to accept that change through the power of the Holy Spirit that will transform you into a new man (Col. 5:10).
